Red Meat/Rooivleis is the magazine for South Africa’s red meat industries. It is a bimonthly, bilingual digital magazine featuring articles in Afrikaans and English, published since 2010 by AgriConnect on behalf of the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (RPO) for its members and stakeholders. The magazine is the official mouthpiece of RPO, the organised commodity organisation for the red meat sector in South Africa, one of the largest sectors in primary agriculture. The content of the Red Meat/Rooivleis magazine, digitally distributed to over 9 000 email addresses, provides South African beef cattle and sheep farmers and industry role players with up-to-date news, helpful science-based practical information and production advice, opinion pieces, and articles on the latest research relevant to the industry. Content is developed across the entire value chain, and reflect farming and processing activities from the farm to the plate.
The magazine is now fully digital with a view to become increasingly interactive and engaging – giving red meat producers everything they need to know, before they need it.

Through the creation of the Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS) body and the drafting of the red meat industry’s Vision 2030, the industry is now speaking with one voice, aiming for sustainable, inclusive growth. In this edition, we provide and industry outlook for 2024, and beyond.
One of the focus areas of the RMIS is, of course, animal and public health. In this edition, we focus on current areas of concern.
A key strategy of Vision 2030 is to bring South Africa’s vast emerging red meat market into the commercial fold. In this edition we look at how this is being done, and the markets that will benefit.
To get the best out of your livestock, you have to put the best in. We delve into feed, veld, supplementation, genetics, and handling.
We take ‘farm to fork’ a bit further, looking at overseas export markets that are taking South Africa’s red meat industry to the next level.
To keep the competitive edge, red meat producers have to embrace sustainability – that is what consumers demand. We take a look at how this is being done locally, and smartly.
